YEAR ROUND TRAIL
MAINTENANCE
-
The Dutchess Rail Trail is one of the county’s most valuable public assets. A year-round recreational destination, tourism driver, and vital car-free transportation route. Yet each winter it’s left unplowed, while cities like Poughkeepsie clear miles of streets and sidewalks. We expect safe roads, why not safe trails?
For many residents, the trail is essential infrastructure used for commuting and daily travel. Plowing a single continuous corridor is a small lift compared to maintaining the road network, but delivers major benefits for safety, tourism, and local businesses. Ulster County already clears its section, proving it’s feasible.
If the county truly values the trail, winter maintenance must be part of that commitment. Safe roads matter. Safe trails should too.

Improving winter maintenance on the Dutchess Rail Trail starts with civic action. Email Dutchess County legislators (with this template) and explain why the trail is essential for safe car-free travel, recreation, tourism, and local commerce. Clearing a single corridor is a small lift with a big community impact.
Then attend a County Legislature meeting and speak during public comment. When residents show up and speak out, priorities shift.
Don’t wait for the snow to melt, make your voice heard.
