Our Projects
Our organization is committed to pushing for the following initiatives in order to make a meaningful impact on the safety of cyclists in Poughkeepsie. Our view is that these projects will do the most to affect that goal.

3 Foot Safe Passing in NY
Forty states and DC require drivers to leave at least 3 feet when passing cyclists. New York does not, it only requires a vague "safe distance," which is unclear and doesn't protect pedestrians. NYBC is pushing for clearer state law. Suffolk, Monroe, and Ulster counties have already passed a 3-foot rule, and two more counties are working on it.

Year Round Trail Maintenance
There is no snow clearing on the Dutchess County Trail. The county lets snow melt, leaving the trail unsafe or unusable much of the year. We ask the county to prioritize snow and debris removal so the trail stays open year-round for recreation and as a car-free local connector.
-
Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan for Dutchess County
A bicycle master plan is a clear, long-term strategy to build connected, protected, and accessible bike routes across the county. It creates a county-wide network instead of piecemeal street fixes. This can reduce congestion, improve air quality, and promote safe, active, nonmotorized travel.
-
East West Arterial redesign
The East West Arterial in its current form encourages traffic to travel at high speeds making it dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The proposed redesign would be a big step in improving safety for all road users.
-
A Downtown for Pedestrians and Cyclists
Reimagine Poughkeepsie’s historic downtown to be more cyclists and pedestrian friendly for the benefit of everyone.
